| The Banyan Centre is a
modern purpose-built day facility providing a unique service to adults with
a learning disability, including those with physical disabilities. The Centre creates exciting, unique and easily accessible opportunities designed to assist people towards a more fulfilling life. Care provision: The care provided is tailored to meet individual requirements and includes personal, occupational and social services: Self Care, including • Personal hygiene • Self image • Personal safety • Self help skills to maximise independence Interpersonal Skills • Communication, making choices, expressing opinion • Awareness of others • Making friends Occupational Skills • Opportunities for indoor and outdoor work experience • Specific and general work skills • Employment opportunities Multimedia and Information Technology • Learning basic keyboard skills • Artwork • Communication skills Community activities • Horse riding • Swimming • Shops, parks, restaurants • Theatre/cinema • Bowling • Places of interest Enabling the use of everyday community, educational and leisure facilities: Community Skills • Knowledge and exploration of community facilities • Safety in the community Multi-Sensory Room • A purpose-built facility which enables Service Users to explore all five senses - • Stimulating, motivating and relaxing Speech and Language Therapy To build upon, improve and explore communication. Undertaken under the guidance of a qualified therapist, working towards a ’Total Communication’ environment, encouraging a range of appropriate communication methods. All services are responsive, flexible, tailored to individual needs and delivered in a manner that promotes respect and equality. The Care Team: The care and service is supervised and facilitated by a centre manager, deputy and care workers. The Centre embraces all the principles of Total Communication. A qualified nurse is available on site or on call at all times. Staff receive specific training in the use of all specialised equipment and where appropriate hold a nationally recognised qualification. Staff are recruited carefully in order to ensure a range of specialist skills and talents. The unit: A modern purpose built day service facility providing programmes for a maximum of 50 full-time adults aged between 18 and 65 (male & female). The Centre is robust in design yet retains a welcoming atmosphere.Transport is available to and from the service, which caters for both learning and physical disabilities. The Centre has first class cafeteria facilities where Service Users can relax, have a meal or snack and meet friends. Support services: Links with local Further Education Colleges provide access to a wide range of courses including social skills, education, and more particular interests such as leisure studies, pet care and many more. Additional services: Multi-Gym A purpose built facility with equipment specifically designed to assist people in physical exercise. Staff supervising the Multi-Gym are trained by the YMCA, the leading specialists in the area. Sessions are tailored to meet the needs and limitations of individuals and can include basic physiotherapy exercises. Spa Pool A purpose built facility with access for all levels of mobility. An enjoyable and relaxing resource, which can include basic hydrotherapy exercises. Leisure • Developing hobbies • Music • Art & craft • Games Our programmes and timetables are individually tailored and offer a wide and varied experience, with opportunities to try out different activities and learn new skills.
