Description
of the unit:
This unit caters for adult males with learning disabilities who may also
be detained under a section of the Mental Health Act 1983
(including those on Restriction Order) due to mental disorders and challenging
behaviour.
Care provision:
The clinical care provision encompasses:
• Continuous treatment and rehabilitation for those needing longer-term
healthcare. This unit has a minimum of 5 staff on duty
(both qualified and unqualified nurses) providing 24-hour
nursing care
• Care Programme Approach (CPA) is individually tailored to each
patient
• Psychiatric input - The Responsible Medical Officer (RMO) for
this unit is a Consultant Psychiatrist, who isin charge of
the overall clinical management of all patients within the
unit
The RMO's involvement includes:
• With support from other clinicians the RMO will assess new referrals
for admission, and make decisions
on discharge or transfer to other suitable units
• The RMO will participate in planning and attending CPA/Section
117 discharge meetings, prescribe drugs,
monitor the progress of patients, consider referrals for other
therapies eg occupational, art and speech therapy
• An RMO will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will
regularly review and authorise patients' leave from the unit under
Section 17 MHA for detained patients
• Clinical reviews will be carried out regularly using a multi-disciplinary
approach. Reports will be prepared including
psychiatric, nursing and social reports for the Statutory
Hospital Managers, Mental Health Review Tribunal and (for ‘restricted’
patients) annual reports for the Home Office
Day Services:
Day Services will form an integral part of the overall care package for
all patients. The unit includes an on-site resource facility
to meet the primary needs of each of the patients. A variety of activities
will be available these will include computer studies, leisure, recreation,
educational and occupational skills and the development of hobbies and
interests. There is an on site snack shop, a hard standing sports area
and an on site spa pool . Community based activities such as leisure centres,
specialist facilities and links with educational establishments will be
accessed where appropriate
The Clinical Team:
The specialist care will be provided by a combination of the following:
• Consultant Psychiatrist (Section 12 approved)
• Therapists: Psychologist, OccupationalTherapist, Speech and Language
Therapists
• Nurses (RMN, RNLD
• Health Care Workers
Exclusion policy:
The Unit is not designed for people requiring medium or high security,
acute or emergency treatment.
The unit:
A purpose built unit providing continuing health care services for up
to 8 adults, normally aged `18 to 65
The unit is robust in design yet domestic in style. It offers a safe and
secure environment and is equipped with a full
range of facilities including: spacious fully equipped kitchen, lounges,
dining facilities and a large garden.
