Description of the unit:

This unit will cater for adults with learning disabilities who may be detained under a section of the Mental Health Act 1983
(including those on Restriction Order) due to mental disorders and challenging behaviour.

Care provision:

The clinical care provision will encompass the following:
• Continuous treatment and rehabilitation for those needing continuing healthcare. This unit will have a minimum of 5 staff on duty
  (qualified nurses/care staff) plus Unit Manager, providing 24-hour nursing care
• Care Programme Approach (CPA)/Section 117 will be individually tailored to each patient with clear outcomes agreed at the outset
• Psychiatric input - The Responsible Medical Officer (RMO) for this unit will be a Consultant Psychiatrist who will be in charge of
  the overall clinical management of all the patients of the unit


The RMO's key involvement will include:

• With support from clinicians (Charge Nurse/Unit Manager), the RMO will assess new referrals for admission and make decisions
  regarding the discharge of patients, or the transfer to other suitable units
• The RMO will participate in planning and attending CPA/Section 117 meetings under the Mental Health Act 1983, prescribe drugs
  and monitor progress of patients, consider referrals to other types of therapy eg occupational, art and speech therapy
• The RMO will be available 24-hours, 7 days a week, they will regularly review and authorise patients' leave from the unit in
  accordance with Section 17 for the detained patient
• Clinical reviews will be carried out regularly using a multi-disciplinary approach. Reports will be prepared including
  psychiatric/nurse reports, Hospital Managers, Mental Health Review Tribunals and Home Office (for restricted patients)

Day Services:

Day Services will form an integral part of the overall care package for all patients. The unit includes an on-site resource facility
to meet the primary needs of each of the patients. A variety of activities will be available these will include computer studies, leisure, recreation, educational and occupational skills and the development of hobbies and interests. There is an on site snack shop, a hard standing sports area and an on site spa pool. Community based activities such as leisure centres, specialist facilities and links with educational establishments will be accessed where appropriate.

The Clinical Team:

The specialist care will be provided by a combination of the following:
• Psychiatrist (Section 12 approved RMO)
• Therapists: Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Art/Speech and Language Therapists
• Nurses (RMN, RNLD)
• Care workers

Exclusion policy:

Those who require either medium/high secure, acute and or emergency treatment.

The unit:

A purpose built unit providing Continuing Health Care Services for a maximum of 8 adults aged between 18-+
The unit is robust in design yet domestic in style. It offers a safe and secure environment and is equipped with the full range of
facilities including; en-suite bedrooms, spacious and fully equipped kitchen, lounges, dining facilities and large garden facilities.
